Sarah Atkins Cooper was born in 1924 to Eugene and Kate Atkins in Corinth, Mississippi. She was the youngest of 4 children, and grew up on her father’s farm with extended family. Her mother’s youngest sister, Enie, was very involved with Sarah's upbringing.

As an adult, Sarah had several secretarial jobs and also worked as a colorizer for black and white photos at a photo studio.

Sarah met Robert L Cooper in Little Rock, Arkansas, and they dated for several years. They were married at the Second Baptist Church of Little Rock on May 29, 1950. They stayed there in Little Rock for a time, then moved to Tulsa, OK, and later to Sheffield, Alabama. Their son Eugene was born there in 1955. The family moved to Pensacola a year later, and their son John was born in 1959 in Pensacola.

Sarah worked as a church secretary for several years after John was born, then sewed and did alterations for neighbors and friends. She has been a member of Pensacola's First Baptist Church since 1960 and sang in the church choir for a number of years in the 60’s. In later years she sewed dolls for the church’s charity projects.

Sarah was a very good cook and the family would save up crabs in the freezer until they had enough for crab cakes. So loved were these delicacies that Robert’s sister and family would come down from Atlanta for them.

Robert passed away in 2007 and Sarah lived on her own until she came to Wesley Haven Villa in 2023.

Sarah’s favorite phrases are “What’s next?” and “You’re in charge.” She never complains and had a sharp sense of humor when she was younger. You can still see some of that in her today!
