Life Restored: One Man’s Story of Change

VIDEO: Charlie in Rehab in 2018

This amazing story of change is told in a way that only a loving son can tell it, and we hope that Charlie Carr’s story inspires you as much as it inspires us.

In August of 2018, Charlie Carr came into our care at The Rehab Inn at Wesley Place on Honeysuckle in Dothan, AL, and spent just over three months working very hard toward recovery. Charlie continued on a path to wellness after leaving us, and now, a little more than a year later, we were thrilled to hear more about Charlie’s amazing transformation from his son, Bubba Carr. Bubba gave us permission to re-print his words and pictures from his father’s journey, as well as links to the Facebook videos he posted.

August 21, 2019, Bubba Carr writes, “Dad’s stroke was on July 17, 2018. He actually had two major strokes which left him unstable to walk, sit up, feed himself, use the bathroom and more. Some of these things we most take for granted he regained a bit quicker than others. After his rehabs, he and mom moved up here to assisted living where he gained more independence week by week. Able to get dressed on his own, take a shower on his own, able to stand and walk on his own and so on. He worked so hard with the PT person always keeping his eye on the future setting goals for himself. He was there by my mom’s side every day when she was in the hospital and rehab taking care of her the best he could. He walked my sister down the aisle at her wedding and danced with her for hours.”

Bubba continues, “One goal that he set was to get back to driving. He practiced with my brother-in-law in the car, with me in the car. He took the online written tests. We went to a neurologist to check out his brain and his cognition, he passed that and with pleasure I say that he received his license today. I couldn’t be more proud of him. Thank you to everyone who has been pulling for him and praying for my family over this past year and more. Your energy has helped lift us up and push us forward.”

Charlie, his family and The Rehab Inn team

In his 2018 Google Review, Bubba Carr wrote: “My dad just finished 100 days at Wesley Place Rehab Inn after having a stroke July 16. The staff at Wesley Place were amazing. Compassionate, caring, kind, professional. Everyone approached my dad’s situation with knowledge, understanding and encouragement. The PT staff were so supportive and the CNA staff kept dad smiling and feeling cared for. They even allowed my mom to stay with dad when no one in the family could stay with her at their home. I’d highly recommend Wesley Place if you or your loved one need rehabilitation…We are eternally grateful!”
